The Balanced System

The Balanced System 2™ framework provides a theoretically driven and practically tested model enabling analysis of an organisation and its services. This approach is designed to meet the needs of any given population and multi agency model.

The framework was originally developed in order to provide a practical and holistic solution to the challenge of meeting the needs of children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). More recently it has been used to consider other therapy services and a pilot looking at the potential of the model for wider children's services is due to begin later this year.

The Balanced System 2™ framework provides a ‘map’ for considering the system as a whole.

The Balanced System 2™ audit tools provide the means to evaluate a system and inform specifications and can therefore be applied across integrated children’s services and beyond.

The model was used by several of the Bercow Pathfinders as part of the Better Communication Action Plan and is central to a number of the resulting “Speech, Language and Communication Needs: Tools for Commissioning Better Outcomes, Commissioning Support Programme, 2011”.
